Lovely account of how Vasily Grossman came to write his Armenian Sketchbook; and of travelling through present-day Armenia in Grossman’s footsteps. Soviet authorities sent Grossman to Armenia in 1961, ostensibly to translate a novel by Hrachya Kochar, but more probably to stop him from making a fuss about the suppression of his own great novel, Life And Fate.
