You’ve chosen to talk about European literature. Did you have a European education?
No, but we were part of the British colony so we had lots of connection with English literature and I don’t mention the local language because it doesn’t make any sense to you. But local literature is more influential for me than European literature – Rabindranath Tagore stories, for example, about poor families and their struggle with their life.
And are there any economics books you can recommend to economists or to students of economics?
No, not really.

Professor Yunus is a Bangladeshi banker, founder of Grameen Bank, economist and 2006 Nobel Peace Prize recipient. As a professor of economics he developed the concepts of microcredit and microfinance – loans for those too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. He has lifted millions of Bangladeshi families out of poverty. Yunus serves on the board of directors of the United Nations Foundation, a public charity created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner’s $1 billion gift to support UN causes.
