Borges went blind at the age of 55 and never learned Braille, instead relying on companions (mostly his mother) to read aloud or take dictation. He used the change as the motivation to learn a new language, too, mastering Old English by ear. He found "an almost tactile relief in the unfamiliar words" (1,529 words)
