Anonymous | Economist | 16 December 2010

Decline of the English pub. Three go out of business every day. Hit by
smoking ban, cheap supermarket drink, recession. Those that survive ruined
by big brewers, who want "high-volume vertical drinking", not cosy places to
  linger

Paul Krugman & Robin Wells | NYRB | 24 December 2010

Brutal attack on Obama. He suckered Democrats by promising a strong
progressive agenda. Once in power, surrendered to hesitation, compromise. To
recover, Democrats need to fight not only the Republicans, but their own
  president

Theodore Dalrymple | City Journal | 23 December 2010

Angry essay on post-war redevelopment of British cities. Modernist planners
of 1960s "produced a visual hell". Since then, standard of new architecture
has much improved, standard of public behaviour has much declined

[10]Journey of the Magi: Meanings in History of a Christian Story
    Links:
      10. http://thebrowser.com/recommended/journey-magi-meanings-history-christian-story-by-richard-trexler

-by Richard Trexler -
The Magi story, the story of the wise men, is probably one of the best
examples  of places where people have read into the Bible all sorts of
beliefs that are not exactly there. For example, the idea that there are
three of them, Matthew’s Gospel never says that. What Richard Trexler’s book
is doing is, firstly, exploring how this interpretation began in early
Christianity, how these details start getting added in one by one.
