Craig Fehrman | Boston Globe | 1 January 2011

Average politician's soundbite on US national TV fell from 43 seconds in
1968 to 8 seconds in 2008. Same happened in print 100 years earlier. Direct
quotes shrank. But it wasn't dumbing down. Media was getting better at
  editing

Clay Shirky | 31 December 2010

Cablegate isn't a re-run of Pentagon Papers. US media has national
loyalties, even when attacking US policy—as during Vietnam war. Wikileaks,
as a rootless global player, isn't loyal to anybody. No constraints on its
  behaviour

Grace Dent | Guardian | 1 January 2011

Diary of a detox. It works. Up to a point. "I'm beginning to wonder whether
new energised me is actually happier. I realise that the point of a large
glass of cold Chablis at 8pm is to give the day a very definite full stop"

Book of the Day

[10]The Great Gatsby
    Links:
      10. http://thebrowser.com/recommended/great-gatsby-by-f-scott-fitzgerald

-by F Scott Fitzgerald - Scott Fitzgerald was obviously quite a big boozer
himself  and  alcohol  plays  a central role in this book. Gatsby is a
bootlegger in the prohibition days and a lot of the action takes place with
alcohol around, either at Gatsby’s parties or on Tom and Daisy’s verandah
where they are drinking whiskey, so alcohol is a big backdrop to the whole
  book.
