Paul Krugman | NYT Magazine | 12 January 2011

Excellent primer on the euro. Why common currency was created. Why Greece,
Ireland and others have got into such trouble. What next steps might be.
Debt restructuring: almost certain. Euro zone partial break-up: very
  possible.

Ann Jones | LAT | 13 January 2011

One way to get Afghanistan back into working order would be to give its
women an equal place in society. Which they had, up until 1989. This used to
be a modern country. Why does West let Karzai re-establish Islamist
  misogyny?

[3]Living With Christopher Isherwood

James Fenton | TLS | 12 January 2011

Latest volume of writer's diaries covers 1960s, mostly in LA. "The world
Isherwood describes, though full of men falling for each other, seems very
short indeed on truly monogamous relationships. The gay life was not like
  that"

[4]Chatroulette's New Business Plan: Naked Men

Austin Carr | Fast Company | 12 January 2011

Book of the Day

[10]The Ottoman Age of Exploration
    Links:
      10. http://thebrowser.com/recommended/ottoman-age-exploration-by-giancarlo-casale

-by Giancarlo Casale -

This  is a new book that argues that the Ottoman Empire had a maritime
interest in the Indian Ocean which we have underrated. We have found it
overly easy to think about the Ottomans in terms of a land empire, which
they obviously were, but they were also an important maritime power and we
ought to be using that to re-examine our standard assumptions about the
West, after the 15th century, being the only source of maritime power, until
you get the Japanese borrowing Western technology and ideas at the end 19th
  century.
