Paula Nelson | Boston Globe | 11 February 2011

Outstanding photo-essay charting eighteen days of Egyptian protests. From
depths of depression and anger to height of jubilation. Until the lengthy
commentaries begin, these images paint the most powerful picture of the
  revolt

[2]America's Hottest Export: Weapons

Mina Kimes | Fortune | 11 February 2011

Epic analysis of growth in arms exports from US. Is there really "an Obama
arms bazaar going on"? Key question: "can we be both the world's leading
champion of peace and the world's leading supplier of the weapons of war?"

Matt Tyrnauer | Vanity Fair | 11 February 2011

Lauren Bacall looks back on her career, relationships and why she hates the
Oscar she won in 2009. Wonderful anecdotes on Sinatra and Bogie. Still
feisty, starts off "What’s the argument for this story? That I am still
  breathing?"

Kristian Coates Ulrichsen, David Held & Alia Brahimi | Open Democracy | 11
  February 2011

Insightful essay comparing Middle East revolts with Eastern Europe in 1989.
Economic stagnation, failure of authoritarian regimes, spreading awareness
of alternate political systems point to similarities. One key difference
  remains

Mark Townsend | The Observer | 6 February 2011

Powerful crime investigation told through story of Romanian's abduction and
violent imprisonment as prostitute in Manchester. Raped by different men 50
times a week. Hers is just one story; up to 5,000 others still to be told

[6]Why Do Protests Ever Bring Down Governments?
    Links:
      6. http://b.rw/ey2xs9

Joshua Tucker | Monkey Cage | 10 February 2011

Excellent questions for political scientists (good comments, too). Why can't
governments just carry on with their business, and wait for protesters to go
home? Do we have a model of what factors determine whether protests succeed?

Robert Lane Greene | 11 February 2011

Book extract skewering language myths, many of them spread by Bill Bryson.
Among the culprits: Arabic has six thousand words for camels and related
equipment; "muscatel" means wine with flies in it; Maoris have 35 words for
  dung

James Willoughby | The Figures Never Lie | 10 February 2011

Probably the most moving resignation letter you'll read. Racing journalist
explains in deeply personal blogpost how he's coming to terms with son's
diagnosis as a low-functioning autistic. And why he feels he must leave his

-by Fatima Mernissi -

Fatima Mernissi is a Moroccan feminist and produced one of the first books
on feminism within an Arab Middle East and in a Muslim context. She also
wrote  a pioneering book-length text of Islamic feminism. In _Islam and
Democracy_  Mernissi  is  taking up Islamic arguments for claiming full
citizenship, democracy, equality and justice. Mernissi is bringing together
secular and religious arguments, and among the things she gives importance
to is the need to reform Muslim personal status law as part of achieving
  democracy.
