A utopian combination of effortless, rapid transportation, idealised urban life, technological solutions for domestic drudgery and avant-garde fashions informed a bold, sleek, silvery design aesthetic. And yet, when the 21C arrived, it looked nothing like this. What happened? (6,300 words)
