The barn swallow, or jebi, is an enduring symbol to Koreans. Those who have been displaced from North Korea view the bird with "nostalgic affection" because after a winter spent in the south Pacific it can, unlike them, return to the northern side of the Han River estuary. The bird is "at once a harbinger of hope, an assuring sign of return, and a symbol of available freedoms otherwise foreclosed" (2,100 words)

An engineer by training and a fraudster by inclination, he was at the storming of the Bastille, instrumental in a late 18C land swindle that ensnared George Washington, and the architect of a currency counterfeiting scheme that was partially responsible for Napoleon coming to power.
